About James Jeffrey Higgins

It would take more than another decade before I would take photography as a more serious outlet for my creative expression. I spent the first ten years working in black and white because I thought only creative photographers worked in black and white. But while attending an exhibition of Ansel Adams Photographs at the Akron Art Museum in the late 80's there were these Large color prints by a photographer from California named Robert Glenn Ketchum. His image of a field in late summer just blew my mind. I was completely overwhelmed by this very simple photograph. It was at that time I knew I would pursue color photography and leave the black and white work to the pro's like John Sexton, and Howard Bond. Slide film would become my film of choice and cibachrome prints my printing material for photographs because it was the best at the time.

As technology continued to progress digital image making became the medium which everyone was using. Today I still use Velvia slide film and my Linhof Technica 4 by 5 view camera with the Pentax 67 as my backup. I have come to understand the importance of the artist and the printer working together when it comes to producing exceptional images. Master printer Michael Wilder did all the scans for me and continues to make the digital photographs for me as well. Many people think photography is an easy skill to develop but I can say with conviction that it is not. Many of these images required years to complete, looking for just the right light ect. "Harding Park", "The Cooling Towers" and "Sunrise at Sharon Steel" are just a few examples of me working for five years to make a single photograph.

My longest search was three decades to find the composition for the image "A Fall Meadow" The most important part about becoming a good photographer is patience. Waiting on just the right light and mood. There was no photoshop used on these photographs, they are simply scans from slides exposed at just the right time.
